Overview of Contactless

Introduction and Deployment

Contactless is an innovative, fast and convenient extension to the chip and PIN cards already in use in the UK. It extends the trusted chip technology to enable a new way to pay that is faster, more convenient and more secure than cash.

Card holders will now be able to wave and pay for low value purchases such as in newsagents, coffee shops, vending and parking by simply waving a new secure contactless card over a card reader. Transactions take less than a second significantly reducing queue times at checkouts.

The nationwide roll out of Contactless payment cards across the UK will begin in London in 2007 and is planned to complete a national roll out by the end of 2009.
